The Pros And Cons Of Portable Air Conditioners

By Jane Dabad

Portable air conditioning units are extremely useful, because they can be moved easily from place to place at your house to combat the temperature in every room. This really is useful if you're unable to afford high AC bills, you have small room for ventilation via windows, or lack the right access for an AC system.

However, many portable air conditioning units don't quite give you the efficiency they claim to do so. Providing less efficiency than claimed, these portable units can run you anything from $300-$800.

Generally, portable air conditioners come with a vent adaptor that allows you to hang it from your window. This allows air to leave the area properly, but it can be fairly ineffective, particularly in bigger rooms. However, they may be convenient, but they also usually do not offer efficiency.

Nearly all portable vents only provide about 50% efficiency, meaning they are about a 5 on the Energy Efficiency Ratio. However, window air conditions that can be fixed provide a minimum of double the amount efficiency. As the air is released of the ventilation hose, it gets combined with air it is actually looking to remove. Therefore the ventilation is not as strong, as the air is rarely quite cold and never quite warm, it can sometimes simply make it slightly less uncomfortable.

This also will mean that, slowly, the actual air will seep into the room, causing an insufficient long-term change to the temperature space. Portable ACs have two different hoses, one brings air inside and cools the new air down, one other exhausts air outside when it's cool.

These ACs give a similar setup to normal, fixed, types. However, efficiency levels will drop as the air moving throughout these hoses can effect energy levels, so despite the fact that ACs with two different hoses are slightly better, they may be still nowhere near the efficiency of the fixed Air conditioning unit.

Another key distinction portable and fixed air conditioning units will be the moisture. While in use, a mobile air conditioner may start to make moisture that in turn goes into the drain tank. Some designs utilize this particular accumulated water to maintain the AC cool, others don't which means you will need to clean out the water one or more times a day.

Portable units are helpful for people who cannot obtain a fixed AC installment, whether that's through financial or logical reasons. Portable units offer mild, intermittent relief, while a typical AC system will provide you with genuine relief. Overall, only purchase a portable AC unit if you can't get yourself a fixed equivalent. In the event you end up buying a mobile AC unit, make certain it arrives with two hoses to help deal with the condensed water.
