Air Conditioning Parts That Make Up Your Air Conditioner

By Frank Hayes

There are two types of air conditioners: through the wall and central units. The air conditioning parts are similar but different. There are the main and control ones, and external and internal ones. Their functions in both types of units are the same. They are designed to cool air, take humidity out, and force the air into the house to make your life more comfortable.

Window units have the several exterior parts. These are adjustable louvers to direct air flow into the room, the control panel for changing temperature settings, the front grill for beauty, and the thermostat sensor, to judge the room temperature and control the cooling cycle.

Main components common to both types of units include blowers, fans, compressor unit, condenser and evaporator coils, filter and filter dryer receiver. A expansion device and refrigerant help produce cool air, the tube and insulation, muffler and casing. Components that control the units include the thermostat and humidistat, contractor, and dampers for central units.

Heat exchange is aided by fans and blowers. These also move the cooled air into the house. Fans are near the condenser, and blowers are near the evaporator. They help move air from the evaporator to the interior of the home.

The compressor, condenser, evaporator coils and refrigerant are what actually turns the coolant into cool air. The compressor changes the pressure of the refrigerant into high and low pressure. The condenser and evaporator simply exchange hot and cold air to cool your home. The tube and tube insulator function to direct refrigerant flow and contain it within the AC. Refrigerants are used to absorb and expel heat to produce the coolness. The muffler is designed to lessen noise of operation. The casing holds it all together.

Items used for controlling function are the thermostat, humidistat, contractor, and damper. The thermostat controls temperature and the humidistat controls humidity. Window units don't all have humidistats, but central units do have them. The contractor controls power to the compressors, fans, and blowers. The dampers in a central unit controls the air flow direction so you get cool where you need it.

It requires all these air conditioning parts to produce and direct cool air where you want it in your home. Most are exchangeable if they break down. If a malfunction occurs, it is possible to buy what you need and fix it, or to get an HVAC technician to do it for you. A malfunction doesn't mean your AC unit is worthless.
